“
how i turned solid rock
into crystal”

when i moved from turkey to sweden to study design
i never imagined myself designing glassware.
but now i’m in love with the material. i think it’s an ama-
zing medium to explore light, reflections and refractions.
it’s more than a physical solid form … it has another
dimension that you can dig into and play with. For nextgen
i went back to basics, to a rugged block of rock. i imagined a
sculptor carving the rock and catching a glimpse of crystal.
i wanted to capture the beauty inside. i was more interested
in showing the process than the finished product … show-
ing the rough and the smooth. in sculpture, the complex
geometry of the unfinished part of the lead crystal vase plays
with the reflections of light. together with the perfection of
the finished parts and its brilliant light refraction, nachtmann
creates a vase or glass that’s more like a piece of sculpture.
als ich aus der türkei nach schweden zog, um dort
design zu studieren, hätte ich mir niemals vorstellen können,
dass ich einmal glaskunst entwerfen würde.
doch inzwischen bin ich ganz verliebt in dieses material. ich
denke, es ist ein fantastisches medium, um licht, reflexionen
und lichtbrechung zu entdecken. es ist mehr als nur eine
physikalisch feste Form … es hat eine zusätzliche dimension,
in die man sich einfinden und mit der man spielen kann. Für
nextgen kehrte ich zum ursprung zurück – einem schroffen
Felsblock. ich stellte mir einen bildhauer vor, der den block
bearbeitet und dabei einen hauch von kristall freilegt. ich
wollte die innere schönheit einfangen. wichtiger als das
fertige produkt war es für mich, den entstehungsprozess zu
zeigen – das raue und das sanfte. bei sCulpture spielt die
komplexe geome-trie des unbearbeiteten teils der kristall-
vase mit der lichtreflektion. zusammen mit der perfektion
des bearbeiteten teils und seiner brillanten lichtbrechung
hat nachtmann nicht nur ein glas oder eine vase geschaffen,
sondern eine moderne skulptur.
